When two recurring collaborative partners present a new release or collection, there is often an implication that the public should know what to expect. If you’re being generous, you could chalk it up to the inherent human yearning for continuity. If you’re feeling cynical, you might say that too many collaborations are content to crank out the old favorites. In either case, this doesn’t apply to Alexander Wang’s work for Adidas, which has presented a different vision of archival, three stripes classics with each new collection.
Alexander Wang Season 4 for Adidas expands upon the manufacturing error aesthetic of Season 3. Where the previous collection focused on re-contextualizing the physical imperfections that occur during the mass production process, Season 4 explores the conceptual landscape of flaws, repurposing and photocopying. In other words, Season 4 doesn’t just present the imperfect in a new light; Season 4 is made of the imperfect.
Three different techniques are utilized to realize this vision of imperfection. Aphotocopyrange combines signature pieces of previous Alexander Wang collections with archival adidas football shirts, resulting in a collision of old and new branding. Thedisjoinpieces are Alexander Wang’s take on so-called “Frankenstein,” cut and sew garments, as pieces from previous collections are physically deconstructed and put back together to create a new form, where different materials and visual elements freely combine in a mix and match atmosphere. The collection’s footwear continues the repurposing theme. A silhouette from the first adidas x Alexander Wang collection, the AW Skate Super is revisited, and outfitted with a new, hybrid construction that incorporates the upper design, fat laces, and shell toe of the iconic Superstar into the shoe’s design. New colorways of the AW BBall and Turnout Trainer are offered, and the AW Puff Trainer finishes things off with an ultra-modern, multi purpose silhouette sporting quilted uppers inspired by an essential on-trend piece of the moment, the practical winter puff jacket.
